SOCA Study Description

Title

Establishing the Reliability and Validity of the Screen for Substances, Opioids, Cannabis, and Alcohol (SOCA)

Purpose and Study Description

The purpose of this research project is to validate a tool measuring perinatal and postpartum substance use behaviors.

Background and Rationale

The SOCA measure is an abbreviated version of the ASSIST, a previously validated measure of substance use, and is designed to rapidly assess women’s substance use behaviors. Specifically, the study is interested in analyzing whether the SOCA acts as a reliable and valid tool for assessing women’s substance use during pregnancy and postpartum. Currently, there is not a validated measure of perinatal substance use that 1) evaluates women’s behavioral health practices related to multiple, specific substances; and that 2) can detect women’s substance use among women without extreme substance abuse patterns. This measure will provide new insight into women’s substance use patterns and will act as a more practical tool for clinicians aiming to implement a regular screening protocol among their pregnant and postpartum patients.

Perinatal screening for substance use risks remains low within obstetrics practices, despite being listed as a gold-standard of obstetrics care. The current lack of rapid assessments for perinatal substance use may contribute to low screening rates, as existing screeners create time burdens for busy providers. By investigating the reliability and validity of the SOCA screen, this study seeks to evaluate a promising new rapid screening measure for use in obstetrics practices.
