I am one of the Co-Presidents of the UFCOM Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group. With the recent shift to Zoom for many of our meetings, we have realized there is an opportunity to provide pre-health students with an avenue to hear from Orthopaedic Surgeons and trainees as a means of exploring potential careers in healthcare. I wanted to see if you would be willing to share the following message through the pre-health listserv:

UF College of Medicine Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group: Open to Undergraduate UF Students: The UFCOM Orthopaedic Surgery Interest Group has decided to extend invitations to some of our events to undergraduates interested in a potential career in orthopaedic surgery (or medicine in general). A common event we will have offered to undergrads are live zoom interviews with orthopaedic surgeons and scientists about their training path and advice to students. Here is the google form signup for the listserv to receive emails about events: https://forms.gle/c4E1q7YnvZtE28yTA

Westside Samaritans Clinic Applications

Westside Samaritans Clinic is a free medical clinic for lower-income individuals in Gainesville, FL. We are now accepting applications to become in-person volunteers for the Summer 2021 term. I highly recommend applying as it is a really rewarding experience. Some responsibilities that you will have at the clinic as volunteers include checking in/out patients, taking the patients' vitals, and shadowing physicians.

Below, I have put the link to our application form. Applications close on Friday, April 2 at 11:59pm. Our application process consists of two phases: a primary written portion and a secondary interview portion. Clinics are currently held every third Thursday of the month from 5-9pm, but we anticipate including more Thursdays as providers become more available and the threat of COVID-19 decreases.

The Theology, Medicine and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School

The Theology, Medicine and Culture Initiative at Duke Divinity School offers the following programs of study:

  1. The immersive residential Theology, Medicine and Culture Fellowship equips participants to engage their callings to healthcare wisely and faithfully. The fellowship combines formal academic study with spiritual formation, mentoring, weekly seminars, church and community-based practicums, and semi-annual retreats. Join like-minded colleagues on a journey to discover resources of the Christian tradition that will help you to reimagine and reengage your work Christianly, with clarity and joy. Savor the chance to spend one or two years away to read, listen, think, and rest, with all of the resources of a world-class Christian divinity school at your fingertips. Engage questions of suffering, illness, healing, and the place of health care in a faithful life, while developing the knowledge and skills you will need to encourage and teach others wherever your work in health care takes you.

  1. The flexible hybrid Certificate in Theology and Health Care (CTHC) is designed for practicing clinicians and clinicians-in-training who long for theological training that integrates Christian faith with clinical practice and who are unable to relocate geographically. Through two residential weeks of study at Duke (one in August, one in January) and two semesters of online learning with TMC faculty, clinicians will discover manifold ways that Christian faith matters for health care. As they immerse themselves in the study of Bible, theology, and church history, CTHC students also will pray and work with professors, spiritual directors, mentors, and fellow clinicians to discern what it means to practice faithfully in their contexts.

Thank you so much,

Heather Plonk

Dream Team involvement opportunity

Dream Team at the University of Florida is a student run, non-profit organization that is dedicated to brightening the lives of the children in the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at UF Health Shands Children's Hospital. Our patients often have complicated cardiovascular conditions, and many spend extended periods of time in the hospital. Dream Team Volunteering aims to dedicate time and service to these children and their families.

Dream Team is hosting our 4th annual 5K fundraiser to help raise money for special in-hospital events as well as engineering projects for the amazing children on the 10th floor of Shands Hospital. Every year, Dream Team normally has the 5K fundraiser on campus but this year it is a little different…its virtual!

Participate by walking, jogging, or running 3.1 miles any time between March 22nd and March 28th! It can be done from wherever you are whether it's a treadmill or in your local park or neighborhood! Decide whether you want to participate as a solo venture or alongside family/friends (socially distanced, of course!) and make sure that everyone registers. Plan where and when your 5k would be best for you! Then submit your time through their website for a chance to win prizes from sponsors like Mi Apa, Swamp Boil, Study Edge and more!

There is a fee to register. However, your payment is contributing to special events and engineering projects that will benefit the children in the PICU and PCICU at Shands Hospital! Get active with us for a good cause!

To learn more about Dream Team and to register for the event, visit https://www.ufdreamteam.org/event-details/
