UF Student Seeking IRB Study Survey Distribution

My name is Maya Kedmi, and I am an undergraduate research assistant under the supervision of the Associate Dean for IFAS Extension, Dr. Michael Gutter. I am currently conducting an IRB approved study investigating the effects of framing on the decisions that patients make regarding cancer treatment and its financial burden (IRB201902891). The selected population for the study are pre-medical and medical students at the University of Florida. We are interested in this particular population because participants are likely to fall susceptible to the framing of suggested treatments, indicating that there is a need for understanding how future health professionals can potentially impact their patients’ critical health decisions.

Your sharing of the survey with other interested parties would be greatly appreciated. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

The results of this study will be extremely beneficial in understanding how the words that healthcare providers choose to use impact their patients’ decisions, especially in the realm of cancer treatment. Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Should you have any questions about this letter or research project, please feel free to contact me by email at mayakedmi@ufl.edu, or Dr. Michael Gutter by email at msgutter@ufl.edu.

The study can be accessed at the following link:

https://ufl.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_d13YLvUshyR6ciF

Sincerely,

Maya Kedmi

New student-run health promotion/nutrition education initiative

My name is Malinda Gong, and I am a third-year pre-med Nutritional Sciences major minoring in Health Disparities. This semester, I have started a student-run initiative called In the Nutri-Know with the mission of promoting individual and community health through nutrition education, and we are currently looking for students to join our team.

The goal of In the Nutri-Know is to facilitate simple, beneficial dietary changes by sharing practical information on the link between nutrition and health, through the creation and distribution of infographics.

We believe that many communities, such as those with lower rates of health literacy, may find value in accessible and digestible resources like infographics that provide useful nutrition and health-related knowledge. Through our infographics, we hope to make balanced nutrition less intimidating by providing relevant information and carefully designed recipes that encompass recommended dietary guidelines and take into consideration time, cost, and food availability barriers. We will be working with community organizations like free medical clinics to distribute these infographics to the surrounding community and will also be sharing them over online/social media platforms.

I was wondering if you would be willing to share this information with your students, as we would love to have a couple more students join our team. Specifically, we are looking for students interested in health/nutrition with some experience in art/graphic design to help put together our infographics!

Thank you for your consideration. Have a wonderful rest of the week!

Best,

Malinda Gong

New Organization at UF!

My name is Vishnu Nanduri and I am a senior pre-medical student at UF. I started an organization called Pre-Health Rising that operates via social media. We create online content to educate the pre-health community on health disparities education and to highlight diverse voices within the pre-health/medical community. So far, we have built a great team but would like to welcome new members to continue to uplift the voices of pre-health students. We are launching our second wave of applications and I was wondering if you could share this on the pre-health listserv.

One of the challenges we have faced is outreach and we want to reach as many pre-health students as we can! The pre-health listserv helped me find great volunteering opportunities at UF. Hopefully, our organization can reach interested pre-health students through the listserv. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions, below is information on our organization, the application, and some helpful graphics.

Hello everyone, I want to share with you all a great volunteer opportunity! I am part of the Pre-Health Rising team and we are looking for passionate individuals from all academic and cultural backgrounds to help create online content on health disparities education and to highlight diverse voices within the pre-health/medical community. Our application is open from today, October 21st to Sunday, November 15th at 11:59 pm (EST). Check out the attached images to see what we are about, use the link below to sign up and learn more, and be sure to follow us on Instagram!

In light of the recent protests and uprisings across the country, many educational and medical institutions are re-evaluating their communities, asking critical questions about their role in perpetuating racism and discrimination within the healthcare field. However, we do not know if this “progress” and awakening of the medical community will be long-term and center the voices of students of diverse backgrounds. Thus, Pre-Health Rising came to be. As students in the medical community, we can use our voices to amplify our experiences, ideas, and perspectives to educate each other about the realities of the pre-health community and medical field. Join us in educating our community about health disparities and fostering an inclusive platform for students of all backgrounds to express themselves.

Thank you for your time and consideration, the Pre-Health Rising team appreciates of your help!

Sincerely,
