Apply for APSA's Undergraduate Mentorship Program 2023-24!

The American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing resources for aspiring physician-scientist trainees. Physician-scientists are important to the future of medical advancement and working to improve the way medicine is practiced in all different fields, and APSA is a great resource for students interested in academic medicine and applying to MD/DO, MD/PhD, or DO/PhD programs.

One of APSA’s goals is to provide opportunities for physician-scientist trainees to develop skills needed for future careers in academic medicine and industry, including trainee mentorship. To accomplish this goal and to provide insight to prospective graduate and professional school applicants, we are starting the eighth year of our Undergraduate Mentorship Program. The goal of this program is to connect APSA students (MD, DO, MD/PhD, and DO/PhD) with undergraduates who are interested in careers as physician-scientists in one-on-one mentor-mentee relationships.

The application is found here and is due October 15th.

Aside from our undergraduate mentorship program, undergraduate students can become associate members of APSA to have access and up to date information about all of these opportunities. We also can help students start local chapters if interested in developing more resources on a local level. Undergraduates can also find out more relevant information through the Undergraduate Resources webpage here!

Thank you for your time, consideration, and support for undergraduate education! Please reach out to us at askmentorship@physicianscientists.org with any questions. We look forward to hearing from you.

2023 Southeastern Medical Scientist Symposium Registration & Abstract Submission Open Now! Hosted by Emory University's School of Medicine

My name is Rincon Jagarlamudi and I am the Pre-Doctoral Liasion for the American Physician Scientist Association. The American Physician Scientists Association (APSA) is a national organization dedicated to addressing the needs of future physician-scientists with respect to their training and career development.

Presently, APSA hosts six regional meetings across the United States throughout the year and one annual meeting, hosted jointly between AAP/ASCI/APSA. The regional and annual meetings are a valuable space for APSA to increase undergraduate representation in the physician-scientist career track. Attending these offers pre-doctoral students a valuable opportunity to interact with numerous physician-scientists and physician-scientist trainees who are all in different stages of their research and clinical journeys. This is a fantastic opportunity for any pre-medical students who presently do scientific research or are interested in research.

Emory University School of Medicine will be hosting the 14th annual Southeastern Medical Scientist Symposium (SEMSS) November 18-19, 2023, at the School of Medicine and Woodruff Health Sciences Center Administration Building. SEMSS is a great opportunity for students to present their work, and for undergraduates to learn about MD/PhD programs, for medical students to learn about Physician Scientist Training Programs, and for everyone to network with colleagues interested in scientific research.  Emory hosts SEMSS every 3 years in conjunction with Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, consistently attracting 150+ attendees from up to 40 schools around the country.  Registration is very affordable and some travel awards are available for presenters.

Registration and abstract submission submissions are open on our website southeasternmdphd.org.

Questions can be directed to southeasternmdphd@gmail.comWe look forward to seeing everyone this fall!

Volunteer Opportunity at Fit For All

Hello Fellow UF Gators!

Fit For All is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) program that serves the special needs community. We are currently looking to bring on more volunteers. We will be resuming our program on September 5th after Labor Day.

Our class schedule is as follows:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3:00-4:00

Tuesday, Thursday 3:00-4:00

We are reaching out to those interested in volunteering for the opportunity to come in and guide our athletes through fitness activities – including a circuit style group class and strength training machines. We ask new and returning volunteers to please complete an online application at the link provided as soon as possible as there is limited capacity:

https://forms.gle/fGteuZauf4R8Bus68

Please remember if you are signing up for a class, you must attend ALL days (either MWF or TTH). Signing up to volunteer is a commitment you must uphold. If you are unable to come in at a given time, you must contact arhum@fitforall.org at least 2 days prior to your expected absence to ensure a substitute to be found. Failure to do so leaves our athletes without a workout buddy.

Below are the new updates regarding class guidelines:

  • Volunteers are required to purchase our T-shirt ($20), this will act as your uniform and entry pass into Gainesville Health&Fitness

  • Volunteers are expected to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to class time

  • Volunteers will respect and treat their fellow peers and the athletes in a fair manner

  • Do NOT attend class if experiencing any sickness or COVID-19 symptoms, including high fever or cough

If you would like to join our team this semester and help our athletes with special needs live a more fun, healthier and fit lifestyle, please fill out the earlier mentioned link: https://forms.gle/fGteuZauf4R8Bus68
