Registration for the Medi-Gators program

"Are you a pre-health student looking for a shadowing opportunity? The Medi-Gators Virtual Shadowing Program is a new program created by undergraduate students and faculty at the UF College of Medicine to help support pre-health students while filling the void in shadowing caused by COVID-19 restrictions.

Registration for the Medi-Gators program will open at 12pm TODAY (9/21/2020)! There are only 375 spots available for the program, so registration is first-come first-served. The program will include presentations from various healthcare professionals and will aim to create an experience as similar to in-person shadowing as possible. It will run from October 5th through November 9th, and presentations will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10am to 11am and from 11am to 12pm on Zoom. Please only register for the program if your schedule allows with these dates. If program requirements are met (explained further in the syllabus), students will receive a certificate of completion.

Please read the attached syllabus for more information. Thank you for your interest in the Medi-Gators Virtual Shadowing Program!

Medi-Gators – A Pilot Study
UF Pre-Health Virtual Shadowing Program Curriculum
October 5th - November 9th, Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10am – 12pm
Program Coordinators:
Alyson Moriarty, alysonmoriarty@ufl.edu
Chris Robinson: crobinson2@ufl.edu
Pouya Ameli: pouya@ufl.edu
Carolina Maciel: carolina.maciel@ufl.edu
Program Description: Through this virtual program, students will have the opportunity to interact
with various medical professionals (Doctors,, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, and
more) from the UF College of Medicine in different specialties as they present case studies, show videos
from the operating room, describe their career paths, give lectures on diseases, disorders, illnesses,
anatomy, procedures, and much more. Students will get a look into the realities of being a medical
professional, and will have the opportunity to learn more about a particular career path of interest.
Program Goals: Because shadowing and volunteering for pre-health students has been limited or
postponed due to COVID-19, this virtual program will give students the opportunity to continue learning
about medicine, ask questions of medical professionals, meet other students at UF on a similar track, and
potentially meet a mentor who can help lead and motivate them through their journey. This program will
aim to provide an experience as comparable to in-person shadowing as possible in the setting of the
ongoing pandemic. At the end of the program, a completion certificate will be given to students who meet
the minimum requirements, listed further down in this syllabus.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills: There are no prerequisite courses for this program; however,
knowing basic anatomy and medical terminology may be helpful in understanding presentations .
Program Format: Students will have the opportunity to watch live presentations through a Zoom webinar
three days per week (variable to accommodate schedules). Attendance will be tracked through Zoom and
through online clicker questionswhich will be placed at random times during each presentation (clicker
program will be announced before the program begins). There will be 2 presentations by medical
professionals per day, from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Once registered, the student will receive an email with
one Zoom link that will be used every day for the length of the whole program.
**It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Medi-Gators Facebook Group for details regarding the
presentations being offered (topic and presenter), and for any other updates pertaining to this program.
The information on each presentation will be posted in the group the day before, and any information that
presenters ask us to post (i.e.slides, contact information), will be posted here.
This program is open to anyone with a UFL email.
Attendance/Requirements for Program Completion: There will be 16 days of this program, totaling to
32 presentations. Students are encouraged to attend as many presentations as they wish, but a minimum
attendance to 75% of the presentations (24 presentations) is required to receive the certification of
completion. Each presentation will contain one poll/question released directly through Zoom to track
attendance. There is no grading for this program, it is strictly based on attendance. **Zoom will allow up
to 300 people at a time, so it is recommended that you log in a few minutes early to ensure you have a
spot for that presentation.
Curriculum Schedule: The daily schedule as well as specific information pertaining to presentation
topics and speakers will be announced in the Facebook group. There will be two presentations every
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday beginning on Monday, October 5th and ending on Monday, November
9th.
Note: This program is free to all - our goal is to make it as accessible to everyone as possible. If you
would like to request an accommodation, please contact Alyson Moriarty at alysonmoriarty@ufl.edu.
