Summer Program In Neuroscience at Boston University (SPIN)

SPIN ’22 is an on-site, 8-week intensive program in neuroscience offered by the Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, and the Graduate Program for Neuroscience (GPN) at Boston UniversitySPIN students are exposed daily to the function and organization of the brain from a clinical perspective alongside neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro radiologists and neuropathologists in the hospital and operating rooms. These experiences are complemented by weekly neuroscience and neuroanatomy didactic sessions utilizing clinical cases and human brain dissections. In addition, students are paired with a clinical or research faculty member to pursue their own, mentored research projects in neuroscience that are organized by GPN, whose faculty are in labs across multiple BU schools and campuses. State of the art research is conducted in topic areas from Alzheimer’s disease to drug addiction, human brain imaging, learning and memory, and the computational modeling of dynamic circuits. From this unique mix of clinical and laboratory experiences, SPIN students gain an understanding of the human brain from several perspectives and develop insights about the relationship of basic research and medicine. Past participants have described the experience as transformative and many have pursued doctoral training in the clinical and/or basic neurosciences.
SPIN is open to undergraduate students with backgrounds in the basic sciences including neurobiology, computer science, mathematics, and engineering. Admission is based on academic performance, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Program administrators will assist students requiring housing and board in Boston for the duration of the course.
We celebrate an open and transparent environment for learning and welcome students with diverse ideas and culture. Join us in this amazing journey!
