Dr. J's Summer Orgo Prep

Many Organic Chemistry professors, myself included, agree that the biggest reason that a student will struggle in Organic Chemistry stems from being underprepared, despite having completed their General Chemistry course successfully. And being underprepared for Organic Chemistry comes in a variety of forms:

  • Not retaining key content from General Chemistry.
  • Approaching the course with the expectation of memorizing everything.
  • Assuming that the content of the course comes in discrete units, separated in time.
  • Having a fixed mindset, rather than a growth mindset.

Any one of these things can be disastrous for a student, and many of us Organic Chemistry professors try to “fix” those things at the beginning of the course. But the truth is, it’s incredibly challenging for a student to change their ways once classes begin for the term. After classes begin, students simply don’t have the time, and they often feel that the stakes are too high to try something different. That’s where Summer Orgo Prep comes in. Summer Orgo Prep is designed to get students ready for their Organic Chemistry course, in the weeks before classes begin. That’s when students have time, and that’s when the stakes are low for students. And to do so, Summer Orgo Prep helps fix the above issues:

  • Summer Orgo Prep fills in gaps in key content from General Chemistry
  • Summer Orgo Prep shows students how their success in Organic Chemistry is all about learning/understanding concepts, rather than rote memorization
  • Summer Orgo Prep shows students how the content throughout the course is cumulative, rather than coming in discrete units.
  • Summer Orgo Prep helps students develop a growth mindset for the course.

Furthermore, Summer Orgo Prep goes on to give students a leg up when it comes to some of the most important new concepts and problem-solving skills they’ll learn in their actual Organic Chemistry course. And it does all of this at a level that’s very accessible to students. That’s where my 23 years of experience as an Organic Chemistry professor at Elon University, and my 10 years of experience as a published textbook author become so valuable.
