2016 Medical externship program recruitment for heart disease in rural China

My name is Meredith, and I work with a medical service non-profit called the China California Heart Watch (www.chinacal.org).

I wanted to pass along the attached flyer and application for an externship program running this December 2016. Dr. Detrano is a faculty member at UC Irvine Public Health; his team has run externships in Yunnan for the past 8 years.

I participated as an extern last year and would highly recommend it for pre-med students and/or students considering a public health track. The externship is quite a deep plunge into rural Yunnan China (screening patients for heart disease, clinical intake, training rural doctors) so it would be best if applicants could speak and communicate in Chinese. Field teams will be led by Dr. Detrano himself and a local physician of Kunming Medical University.

We have a couple of spots for December of this year. The externship will run from Dec 9 to 27. In addition to screening children for congenital heart disease, lectures will incorporate broader issues of healthcare in China. We encourage applications from students who are hardworking and committed to working in a limited resources setting.
More information: www.chinacal.org. Applicants should email me at meredithfanyang@gmail.com if interested

UF in Cusco Study Abroad with Clinical Experiences

Hi, everyone:
The Study Abroad Fair is now over, we had a nice pair of post-Fair info sessions, and now it’s time to
look at a few numbers related to the UF in Cusco – Service Learning for the Health Professions
program (Summer A 2017).
*$5,776.  This is the cost of the program, and I guarantee you that this is a true study abroad
bargain.  This is not a salesperson talking, it is the 100% truth.  I have been involved in the business
of study abroad for about 15 years, and this program provides more value than I have ever seen.  UF
faculty, service placements, beautiful setting, mind-blowing excursions, etc., etc.—UF in Cusco has it
all!  J
*$12.  This is the cost of the one textbook you will need.  Not bad, eh?
*2.  This is the number of students who have already signed up.  Doesn’t sound like many, right?
Wrong.  J  That two students have ALREADY signed up for a study abroad program this early (and it
IS very early) tells you something about student interest and demand for the program.  You don’t
need to sign up “tomorrow,” but my advice is to NOT wait until…
*…February 3, 2017, which is the application deadline. The program flyer contains some incorrect information.  UF in Cusco has an earlier deadline, February 3rd, because we need to arrange the
service placements for all our students.
*M, 12:00-3:00 and W, 2:00-5:00.  These are my Fall office hours (1B Dauer Hall).  Stop by if you have questions, and/or to have your UF in Cusco sheet signed.  The official sign-up process takes place via the UFIC website, but there is one “old-school” piece of paper that requires my signature.

Check out our student-produced website:  www.ufincusco.weebly.com  (which includes a link to the UFIC application page)
Look me up on Facebook for tons of photos:  www.facebook.com/greg.moreland.50/
Take care,
Dr. Moreland
P.S.  In an upcoming message, I’ll provide more information regarding scholarships.
