MEDICAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITY AS CLINICAL TECHNICIAN/ASSISTANT

Comprehensive Retina Consultants offers the opportunity to learn and train in clinical ophthalmology. Since patients with ophthalmic and retinal diseases often have multiple medical issues, there is an opportunity to learn not only ophthalmology but also general medicine.

Dr. Shalesh Kaushal has significant experience in research and in the training of undergraduate and graduate students, residents, fellows and those seeking advanced training in clinical and research medicine. The CRC training program requires a minimum one-year commitment of at least 20 hours/week but preferably a full-time commitment of 40 hrs/week. It is intended for talented, motivated students who are seriously interested in pursuing medical, graduate, PA or optometry school. You must primarily have a strong desire to help patients as well as work well as a team member, be curious and want to learn. Applicants must have already completed their bachelor’s degree or intend to shortly. Upon successful completion, each student will have a letter of recommendation for the next step in his/her career.

Clinical Opportunities

Clinical responsibilities of the CRC medical assistants include obtaining appropriate medical histories (including chief complaint, present illness, past medical history, review of systems, family and social history). Additionally, you will learn the eight-point ophthalmic exam which includes measuring and assessing: 1) visual acuity; 2) intraocular pressure; 3) extraocular muscle function; 4) confrontational visual fields; 5) pupil evaluation; 6) external eye evaluation; 7) anterior segment evaluation; and 8) retinal evaluation. You will also learn to measure blood pressures and pulse rates accurately, and perform other specialized tests including quantitative assessment of dry eye disorders and basic phlebotomy.

In addition, the CRC medical assistant will learn and use cutting edge diagnostic instruments including automated visual field analysis, OCT (optical coherence tomography) imaging of the macula and optic nerve, microperimetry, fluorescein angiography, quantitative autofluorescence (qAF) imaging, electrophysiological testing of the macula and optic nerve, glaucoma testing and cataract evaluation.

You will also learn how to answer patient telephone inquiries and concerns while participating in some of the administrative tasks that are integral for running of a good medical practice.

Research Opportunities

CRC medical assistants will participate in at least one clinical research project as part of their training. This will involve mentoring and preparing clinical trials and studies with Dr. Kaushal. Included in this will be to apply for Institutional Review Board (IRB) to obtain approval for the trials or studies. Additionally, you will be directly involved in patient recruitment and enrollment, obtaining informed consent, undertaking the appropriate clinical and diagnostic evaluation of patients, filling out case report forms and assuring patient compliance. There will also be regular, weekly discussions about the progress and issues related to research protocols and patients who are participating.

This robust clinical and research experience will prepare CRC medical assistants for their next academic and professional opportunities. To learn more about CRC and Dr. Kaushal, visit www.ComprehensiveRetinaConsultants.com.
