Shadow Abroad Latin America Program Open House

Who else wants to learn Spanish and shadow doctors in Latin America this summer? Did you know the USA has more Spanish speakers than Spain? In fact, only Mexico has more. The language gap in America continues to widen.

What does that mean for the future of healthcare? What does that mean for you?

Spanish & Medicine study abroad helps prepare future healthcare professionals for success in America’s demographic realities.

Shadow Abroad's Latin American program, featuring Spanish immersion and medical shadowing, is open to students who will have completed at least one year of a pre-med or pre-health track before the summer start date. The trip is suitable for all levels of Spanish learners, even beginners.

You are invited to attend the upcoming presentation plus Q & A session!

Spanish & Medicine Study Abroad Open House:

Date: November 14, 2024

Project Horseshoe Farm Gap Year Fellowship

Hello everyone!

My name is Paola Rodriguez, and I am a recent UF graduate now doing a community health fellowship with Project Horseshoe Farm, a non-profit organization focused on community health. I am reaching out to share an exciting opportunity for students interested in improving the health of underserved communities through direct service.

Project Horseshoe Farm (PHF) is a non-profit organization with three sites across the U.S.: Greensboro, AL; Marion, AL; and Pomona, CA. As a pre-med student, I was interested in pursuing an opportunity to learn more about social determinants of health and become immersed in a new community. Being a fellow with PHF has allowed me to build meaningful relationships with community members, learn about different types of social services, and connect with individuals of all ages. This is a great gap year opportunity for students who are interested in medicine, social work, or any other career of service to others.

I have attached a flier with more information below. The deadline to apply to the gap year fellowship is February 2nd, 2025. Internship applications are also accepted year-round on a rolling basis. Students interested in applying can also learn more at our website: projecthsf.org.

Thank you so much and I hope you have a great day!

Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) Pre-Med Mentorship Program

On behalf of the Student Association of Military Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (SAMOPS) organization, I would like to reach out and discuss the possibility of connecting with pre-med students who are considering joining the military via Health Professional Scholarship Program (HPSP) or Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP).

SAMOPS is an organization to serve and represent osteopathic physicians in the uniformed services (Air Force, Army, and Navy). Student members are current DO medical students who have gone through the process of applying and being selected to receive either HPSP or HSCP. HPSP offers two-, three- and four-year military scholarships that can help cover civilian medical school tuition, pay for fees, and provide a monthly living stipend. More information can be found here.

As you are aware, the path to becoming a military physician is long and difficult. The purpose of the SAMOPS Pre-Med Mentorship Program is to give undergraduate students an opportunity to ask current military medical students first-hand questions such as the medical school application process, MCAT, HPSP application process, officer school, and more. The program is designed to “match” a SAMOPS student with an undergraduate student. The match process will take place in DEC and MAR. Once matched with a mentor, our hope is that students can develop a meaningful, professional relationship. Through this experience, students can gain insight into the profession and seek advice, which may help in decision-making processes.

Below is a link to register with the SAMOPS Mentorship Program. The information you input will be available to the SAMOPS Board. Upon match-time, you will receive an email confirming your match along with the contact information of your matched AMOPS Physician.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have via email at jillianperl.manalang@westernu.edu.

Sincerely ENS Jillian Manalang, USN SAMOPS Mentorship Chair

Altius 1-on-1 MCAT Sessions

Altius Mentoring has a Mission-Driven Focus on our students' success. So, everyone who registers for and follows the Altius MCAT program is assured a great outcome. If you register before November, you'll also get 5 additional tutoring sessions with your program.

Is self-study proving ineffective?
Although self-studying is inexpensive, many students find they need more structure and some accountability to succeed. They often face seemingly unbreakable score plateaus, and disappointing MCAT scores. Research by Bloom (1984) demonstrates that college students score two standard deviations higher with 1-on-1 tutoring! With the reassurance of a 30-day moneyback trial period, plus 5 free 1-on-1 sessions ADDED to every program, now may be the perfect time to try private tutoring for yourself.

Want more details on all our program options? Click the button below to schedule an individualized MCAT Consultation for your specific needs.

Harvard Medical School Pre-Medical Webinars

Hello,

My name is Marcie Mai, I am the Recruitment and Student Life Manager in the Office of Recruitment and Multicultural Affairs (ORMA) at Harvard Medical School. Our office aims to recruit students who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM), first-generation college students, LGBTQ+ students, and those from low-income backgrounds. One way we support this mission is by hosting webinars for pre-med students to help them navigate the medical school application process. Below are the dates and topics for our upcoming webinars, all scheduled for 6:30 PM EST.

Here is the registration link.

November 7, 2024: Medical School Application Process

Learn more about medical school applications, deadlines, and application assistance aid programs. This webinar will provide an overview of applying to medical school and how to prepare for a successful application process. We will provide a suggested timeline based on the intended academic start date. This webinar will be an interactive presentation to help you get started on your medical school journey!

November 21, 2024: Personal Statements

Hear from our current students about their personal statement writing process. Learn about the components that make a personal statement and common questions asked. Personal statements allow the admissions committee to learn more about you, hear your story, and understand the experiences that have shaped your journey toward a career in medicine.

February 1, 2025: Interviewing Best Practices

Learn about the different types of interviewing processes during medical school applications and how to best prepare for them. We will have a panel of HMS medical students sharing their interviewing experiences during their medical school journey. Join us to learn how to put your best foot forward during your medical school interview.

March 20, 2025: Why Medicine?

Join our Harvard Medical School alumni and current students as they share why they chose to become doctors and pursue medical school. You will hear from current students in different stages of their educational journey, as well as alumni reflecting on their time at HMS and sharing what life has been like after graduation.

Let me know if you have any questions. We look forward to meeting students!

Best,

Marcie
