My name is Cole, and I am the coordinator for the Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (GPiBS) on the OU Health Sciences Center campus. GPiBS is an interdisciplinary program offered through the Graduate College. GPiBS is the primary entry point for biomedical PhD students at OUHSC. Through this program, students can pursue their doctoral degree with one of our 150+ faculty mentors through one of seven departments: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or Physiology. Students will graduate with a PhD from one of the participating departments/programs to prepare them for careers in academic research, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, health management, teaching, and more. Our students complete their doctoral degrees in an average of 5.5 years and ultimately publish an average of 5.3 manuscripts with their mentors, setting them up for excellent post-doctoral fellowships or other employment opportunities.
The application portal for GPiBS is open now with a priority deadline of December 1st. The portal will remain open after the deadline; however, applications completed after December 1st are not guaranteed to be reviewed. If you have students interested in pursuing a PhD in the Biomedical Sciences, please encourage them to apply early. You can direct interested students to the GPiBS website or to us at GPIBS@ouhsc.edu for additional information or questions.
GPiBS highlights:
- Stipend - $30,000 (beginning July 1, 2022)
- Full tuition/fees waiver
- Health Insurance provided
- Three NIH T32 training grants (Immunology, Geroscience, Vision)
- >95 mentors seeking graduate students!
The Graduate College at the OU Health Sciences Center also hosts four summer undergraduate research programs aimed at preparing and encouraging undergraduate students to pursue careers in biomedical research or health-related sciences. Studies show undergraduate research programs are beneficial to the success of applying to and completing a graduate degree program. Our programs introduce outstanding undergraduate students to the rigorous academic preparation required to achieve these goals, through participation in intensive, full-time (40 hours/week), hands-on research experiences in the laboratories of OUHSC biomedical faculty mentors in Oklahoma City. SURP applications opened on November 1st with a deadline of January 31st, 2022. More information about our summer programs can be found at the SURP website or by contacting us at SURP@ouhsc.edu.
We would love to speak with students and faculty about our programs at OUHSC; please email us at gpibs@ouhsc.edu if you would like to arrange a date for a GPiBS/SURP talk.
