Fit for All is
seeking for volunteers to train athletes with special needs for this upcoming
season. The program runs Monday-Friday for 6-weeks at a time (with one-week
break between each program). Volunteers can contribute by training a full
season during our M/W/F 2:15-3:30 class, or our T/TH 1:45-3pm class.
Some may call it
community service; however I prefer to call it “paying it forward”. Any chance
you get to better someone else, will ultimately make you a better person.
Although it is a requirement for some classes, programs, etc. You should
be inclined to volunteer for the sheer fact that it makes this world a better
place.
About FIT for ALL:
After I graduated
from the University of Florida’s College of Health and Human Performance (HHP)
in 2013, I began working with a local health club called Gainesville Health
& Fitness. This opportunity gave me the chance to implement a fitness
program for adults with special needs called FIT for ALL.
During each
season, there are 2 six-week programs with a total of 36-hour long workouts to
condition the entire body. These workouts will include strength training, using
our safe and effective circuit line equipment, group exercise classes
incorporating movements with cross-lateral integration (which studies have
shown to improve cognitive functions), and a multitude of other sports-related
activities. Each participant will be partnered with at least one coach for
customized assistance.
As great as this
program is, it does require a good amount of resources, the largest, of course
being man-power.
I would like to
open this opportunity up to all of my Gators out there who would like to help
individuals with special needs live a more fun, healthier and fit lifestyle.
After a full season of volunteering with acceptable attendance, each volunteer
will receive a recommendation letter. There is also a small perk for each time
you volunteer…you get to use the facility for the rest of the day for free!
That’s right. You can work-out/swim/ relax in one of the greatest health clubs
in the world by just volunteering that day.
Do NOT worry if you have never worked with
individuals with special needs before. We have trainings that will teach you
everything that you will need to know to inspire them throughout their
workouts.
