Your ADEA AADSAS® Application With a Resume
“As someone who has read over 35,000
applications in my more than 20 years as an admissions
officer, the Experiences and Achievements section of the
application doesn’t receive enough attention from
applicants,” says Corky Cacas, Director of Admissions at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine.
“And I get it! After zeroing in on the best personal
statement, spending hours transferring your coursework
details and credit hours and securing faculty to submit
evaluation letters on your behalf, all you want to do is
hit the submit button. Yet, I would caution applicants to
pay extra attention to this section because it is the
initial opportunity to present yourself to admissions
officers and committee members to get a sense of the real
you.”

Though
School Is Out, Dental School Admissions Offices Are Kicking
Into High Gear
With school out for the summer, be sure to
keep your email address updated within the ADEA AADSAS
application. Changes to email and physical addresses may be
made in the application portal. If you used your school
email address to submit your application, be sure to check
it periodically for messages from dental schools.
Studying for the DAT may seem daunting at
first, but with a study plan tailored to your availability,
goals, strengths and weaknesses, your target score is
within reach. Shelley Johannesson of East Tennessee
University ’17 and Katherine Malyszek of University of
Florida ’18 recently shared their study plans to show the
many individualized approaches to prepare for the exam.

How can you be a successful dental hygiene
program applicant? As with most allied dental education
programs, dental hygiene has a competitive admissions
process. What does it take to stand out? Lisa Maxwell, LDH,
B.S., M.S.M., Dental Hygiene Program Director at Indiana
University School of Dentistry, has tips and guidance for
applying to a dental hygiene program.
The 2017 ADEA Survey of Dental School Seniors
covers a wide range of topics pertinent to dental
education, including students’ motivation to pursue
dentistry, subject area preparedness, debt incurred and
career plans. Studying the experiences and plans of new
dental school graduates allows school administrators and
policymakers to better understand future dentists’
motivations and challenges.
