The School
Health Interdisciplinary Program (SHIP) is looking for volunteers for the
Spring 2018 semester. SHIP is an afterschool program that engages
graduate and undergraduate volunteers in teaching 3rd-5th grade Alachua County
students about various health topics such as nutrition, physical activity,
stress management, importance of sleep, dental health, hand washing, injury
prevention and safety topics, etc. Volunteers visit their assigned site
and teach developmentally appropriate health curricula. Volunteers also
lead students in varies skill-based activities to teach the students how to
engage in health-promoting behaviors. Volunteering with SHIP also means
serving as a mentor to children!
SHIP crew members (i.e., volunteers) are expected to
volunteer at least once a week (for one hour-long lesson; between the hours of
2:45pm-4:45pm), every week, throughout the Spring 2018 term. SHIP crew
members may volunteer twice per week if their schedule allows. Volunteers are
needed Monday-Thursday, between the hours of 2:45pm-4:45pm. All SHIP crew
members will be trained and prepared for this task; we simply ask that you have
an interest in health/health education, like working with elementary-aged
students (3rd-5th grade students), and that you see the value in educating
children about health.
