Call for Papers: Health, Medicine, and Society

Waves: An Undergraduate Journal is currently accepting submissions to its upcoming special issue: Health, Medicine and Society. The issue will feature work that humanizes the challenges of medical research, clinical practice, and public health and considers the complex social contexts of health and medicine.

It is abundantly clear that health outcomes are determined by far more than genes. Sociodemographic factors—factors such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, health insurance status, and living environments—have a powerful influence on our present and future health.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified the many sources of health inequity worldwide, it has also catalyzed promising but challenging innovations to increase access to healthcare—the expansion of telehealth, the use of robotics for contactless delivery of PPE and medical equipment, the implementation of AI and VR platforms to identify patients’ risks for COVID.

We welcome submissions that unpack sources of health inequity as well as those that detail solutions. Primarily, we are interested in human responses to human problems and how we might best, collectively, find solutions to these issues. Submissions may be grounded in the medical sciences or demonstrate other disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspectives—e.g., in anthropology, psychology, history, political science, gender studies, and public health.

Waves accepts research articles, literature reviews, digital projects, and other forms. See our submission guidelines for more details.

Potential topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Structural health inequities and barriers
  • Medical racism and/or anti-racist medical praxis
  • LGBTQIA+-related medical bias
  • The relationship between clinical medicine and public health
  • Health policies such as mask or vaccine mandates
  • Innovations in healthcare provision and technology (such as AI)
We will begin publishing projects selected for Health, Medicine, and Society on a rolling basis in January 2022. Submissions will be accepted through April 25, 2022. Please send inquires and submissions to waves.uj@gmail.com.

Paid Biomedical Internship and Gap-Year Research Opportunities

The Buck Institute’s summer internship and gap-year programs offer undergraduate students the opportunity to investigate insights into the critical molecular and biological drivers of aging as well as translation of that research into new therapies which will improve healthspan. Both programs emphasize laboratory and communication skills training, such as a mock grant proposal and research presentations. Graduating seniors can apply to the internship program, and the gap-year program is designed to accommodate time for applications and interviews during the research. International students are encouraged to apply to both programs.

Research topics include:

• Age-dependent neurodegenerative diseases

• Autophagy and cellular homeostasis

• Cellular metabolism and senescence

• Computational analysis of aging and disease

• Neuroinflammation and the microbiome

• Ovarian aging

• Synapse pathophysiology

A program overview, the online application, and full descriptions of each 2022 research project being offered can be found at:

Pre-med Webinar w/ Current Top-12 MD Students

Our team at Atlantis is hosting a very relevant event late in exam season and I’d like to ask if you could share this with your students. Our webinar, on 12/14 at 7pm ET, will be a panel with John, Zoey, and Megan, all of whom are current students at Top 12 MD programs (WashU, Duke, U. Washington). The topic will be the real role that extracurriculars and shadowing actually had (or didn’t have) in their MD application (esp. the interviews). What college activities were and weren’t worth the time? What did the dozens of interviewers they collectively faced actually spent time asking questions about? Were there activities these students invested hundreds of hours in college to then get zero interest in interviews? We’ll then finish with a Q&A.

Your students can save their spot by registering here; a recording will be sent afterwards for those who cannot attend. And you are most definitely welcome to come as well (and ask these MD students hard questions!).
