Dept of Medicine Scribe Program Hiring

Good Afternoon,

My name is Blake Stacey, and I am the head scribe for the new UF Department of Medicine Scribe Program. Thanks so much for posting our application on your listserv several months ago; we received a great deal of applications from students who are Pre-Health listserv subscribers.

We just opened our application again for our third hiring class. Would you be able to include the following information in an upcoming listserv posting?

Department of Medicine Scribe Program Now Hiring!

Interested in becoming a clinic scribe? Working as a scribe is a great way to get in-depth, educational clinical exposure if you are interested in pursuing a future career in the medical field. Scribes work directly with physicians in several of our clinics so that physicians can spend more time with their patients instead of with their documentation.
The Department of Medicine started its scribe program in collaboration with the Department of Emergency Medicine in July 2016. Our scribes are currently active in specialties including gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology, general internal medicine and cardiology at the UF Health Medical Plaza, Springhill and Tower Hill locations. We expect the program to continue to grow into more Department of Medicine specialties in the near future.
What does a scribe do?

Scribes are responsible for handling documentation in an electronic medical record during patient encounters in clinic. This includes:

  • Accompanying physicians to each patient they see throughout a clinic shift
  • Recording pertinent medical histories, physical exam findings, diagnostic results, assessments and plans into the medical record
  • Aiding physicians in organization and presentation of medical information within each patients’ medical record
What are we looking for in a scribe?

The Department of Medicine is looking for dedicated applicants with a clear interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. In the past, applicants to this scribe program have been pre-medical, pre-PA, pre-nursing, and other pre-health students of all different ages and levels of education. Most of our applicants have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are in a gap year before graduate school, but this is by no means a prerequisite for applying. We accept both current students and graduates alike to work in our program, but if you are still a student, you must have a flexible class schedule and be willing to work two to four shifts per week. Shifts worked by our scribes are during daytime hours from Monday to Friday. All applicants must be willing to commit at least 12 consecutive months to working in our program. Please check below for how to apply.

Completing an Application

We are currently accepting applications from now until December 2nd. You can access our application here https://goo.gl/forms/c6e771kmLkdSCHQz2. Before completing the application form, please have an updated CV and cover letter ready to submit. The cover letter should detail why you would like to be a scribe and what you can bring to our program. If you have any questions about the application form or problems with document submission, please send us an email at the address listed below.

Hospital Internship Opportunity For Listserv

Hello UF Pre-Health Students!
My name is Leah Truckenbrod and I am a junior biochemistry major. I wanted to let you know about an exciting opportunity that I thought you all might be interested in.
Last Summer, I was admitted to the Atlantis Fellowship which enabled me to shadow doctors for 20+ hours a week in Talavera de la Reina, Spain. It was a life-changing experience and I'm much more confident that medicine is the right path for me because of it. You can check out all the details on their website here.
If you're interested in learning more or hearing about my experience, contact me before you apply and I will make sure your application is given priority review. Feel free to email me back at ltruckenbrod@ufl.edu if you want to hear about my experience or have any questions!
Best,
Leah Truckenbrod
