Invitation to MD/MPH Informational Session at the University of Miami

AdventHealth University PA Program Virtual Information Session

Dr. J's Summer Orgo Prep

Many Organic Chemistry professors, myself included, agree that the biggest reason that a student will struggle in Organic Chemistry stems from being underprepared, despite having completed their General Chemistry course successfully. And being underprepared for Organic Chemistry comes in a variety of forms:

  • Not retaining key content from General Chemistry.
  • Approaching the course with the expectation of memorizing everything.
  • Assuming that the content of the course comes in discrete units, separated in time.
  • Having a fixed mindset, rather than a growth mindset.

Any one of these things can be disastrous for a student, and many of us Organic Chemistry professors try to “fix” those things at the beginning of the course. But the truth is, it’s incredibly challenging for a student to change their ways once classes begin for the term. After classes begin, students simply don’t have the time, and they often feel that the stakes are too high to try something different. That’s where Summer Orgo Prep comes in. Summer Orgo Prep is designed to get students ready for their Organic Chemistry course, in the weeks before classes begin. That’s when students have time, and that’s when the stakes are low for students. And to do so, Summer Orgo Prep helps fix the above issues:

  • Summer Orgo Prep fills in gaps in key content from General Chemistry
  • Summer Orgo Prep shows students how their success in Organic Chemistry is all about learning/understanding concepts, rather than rote memorization
  • Summer Orgo Prep shows students how the content throughout the course is cumulative, rather than coming in discrete units.
  • Summer Orgo Prep helps students develop a growth mindset for the course.

Furthermore, Summer Orgo Prep goes on to give students a leg up when it comes to some of the most important new concepts and problem-solving skills they’ll learn in their actual Organic Chemistry course. And it does all of this at a level that’s very accessible to students. That’s where my 23 years of experience as an Organic Chemistry professor at Elon University, and my 10 years of experience as a published textbook author become so valuable.

More information can be found on the Summer Orgo Prep website.

Health Buddies: A Unique Pre-Health Community Service Opportunity!

Looking for fully remote, health centered,  volunteer service hours with flexible scheduling? Health Buddies is the program for you!

Being diagnosed with a chronic disease can feel isolating. The Health Buddies program through Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay uses companionship as medicine for those that are diagnosed with chronic illnesses. Health Buddies Volunteers commit to 2-3 phone calls per week for 12 weeks with a single client. Your Health Buddies team will provide you with the training necessary to guide you through the 12 weeks. You will have the opportunity to provide companionship as medicine to your client and help them break through the feelings of isolation and loneliness. Additionally, with the help of your Health Buddies' Team, you will be able to guide your client to community resources that they may need to empower themselves, such as food, transportation, and medical equipment.

Health Buddies have been working with college students over the past four years of our program, and from that have earned the "Program of Distinction" title from the organization Generations United.

Participating in the Health Buddies program will allow you to be involved in a unique experiential learning opportunity where you provide valuable support to seniors by providing much needed companionship, a connection to community resources, and encouraging participants to follow their doctors' recommendations. This program not only allows you to make a meaningful impact but also provides you with firsthand experience in patient interaction and health advocacy. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to our community while gaining invaluable experience that will set you apart in your professional school applications.
